There are many kinds of viscosity reducers for water-based drilling fluid, which can be divided into two types according to their different mechanism of action, namely dispersive viscosity reducers and inhibitory viscosity reducers. The dispersive viscometers mainly include inorganic salts, tannins, lignosulfonates and lignite, and the suppressive viscometers mainly include low molecular polymer viscometers and organosilicon viscometers. The main dispersive viscosity reducing agents commonly used on site are sulfonated tannin extract (SMK), sulfonated tannin (SMT), sulfonated lignite (SMC), iron chromium lignosulfonate (FCLS, commonly known as iron chromium salt) and so on. In order to improve the stability of high temperature salt resistance, the dispersive viscosifier generally contains a certain amount of chromium ions.
New product: Ferrochrome lignosulfonate (FCL) is product linked between lignosulfonate in sulfite-cellulose liquor with iron sulfate (FeSO4) and sodium bichromate. FCL is used to reduce the viscosity and the static shear force of drilling fluids rooting of fresh and mineral water, and can slightly inhibit the decomposition of clay.Use lignosulfonate effectively when pH is between 8.5 and 9.5.

Polythin is an acrylic based, low molecular weight. It is effective thinner/deflocculant with exceptional tolerance to high temperature, divalent cautions, pH fluctuations and salinity. It will replace traditional thinners in most applications, exceeding those products in performance and cost effectiveness. Polythin is used to maintain rheological stability in the presence of electrolyte contamination from salt, gypsum and cement. It will also aid in the prevention of high-temperature mud gelation.
