Product Description

Gilsonite OBM filtration control additive is a naturallfiltration control additive haltite mineral widely used as a high-performance additive for high-temperature, high-pressure (HPHT) filtration control in oil-based and synthetic-based drilling fluids. Specifically engineered for applications where bottom hole static temperature (BHST) remains below 400°F (204°C), this versatile gilsonite OBM filtration control additive gilsonite extrudes into microfractures and pore throats within the formation, creating an effective sealing and plugging mechanism.

This action significantly enhances wellbore stability by mitigating shale sloughing and minimizing fluid invasion. The partial solubility of this gilsonite OBM filtration control additive contributes to increased fluid viscosity, particularly beneficial in lower-temperature intervals, while simultaneously improving emulsion and thermal stability. Its unique molecular structure enables effective bridging and sealing across various formation types, making it an essential component for maintaining wellbore integrity in challenging drilling environments.

Applications/Functions

Reduces both API and HPHT fluid loss in oil-based and synthetic-based mud systems

Stabilizes sensitive shale formations and minimizes borehole collapse

Enhances emulsion stability and fluid performance under elevated temperatures

Improves filter cake quality and reduces differential sticking potential

Provides wellbore strengthening in fractured and depleted formations

Enhances fluid rheology through controlled partial solubility

Advantages

Effective across a wide range of applications with BHST below 400°F (204°C)

Excellent at stabilizing brittle shales and reducing washout in challenging interbedded formations

Promotes superior filter cake quality and sealing efficiency

Non-fluorescent, making it ideal for reservoir sections where logging is critical

Compatible with common oil-based fluid additives

Cost-effective solution for HPHT filtration control

Environmentally acceptable natural mineral product

Technical Mechanism
The additive functions through a combination of mechanical bridging and chemical sealing mechanisms. The granular particles form effective bridges across pore throats and microfractures, while the thermoplastic nature of the material enables deformation under pressure to create impermeable seals. The partial solubility characteristics enhance fluid viscosity and contribute to filter cake consolidation.

Typical Properties

Appearance: Black homogeneous powder

Softening Point: 365–420°F (185–216°C)

Specific Gravity: 1.06

Particle Size: 90% passing 200 mesh

Moisture Content: ≤ 3%

Bulk Density: 0.6–0.8 g/cm³

Recommended Treatment
A typical treatment range is 2–10 ppb. Due to variations in mud systems and downhole conditions, pilot testing is strongly recommended to determine the optimal dosage and evaluate its impact on rheological and filtration properties. For severe lost circulation scenarios, concentrations up to 15 ppb may be required. After addition, monitor solids control equipment over multiple circulations to prevent unintended removal of the product. Introduce gradually through the hopper while maintaining adequate agitation to ensure proper dispersion.

Packaging & Storage
Available in 25 kg multi-ply paper bags with inner polyethylene lining. Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The product maintains stability for 36 months when stored under proper conditions. Avoid excessive humidity during storage to prevent caking.
